Rowing for Maryland
Come to our Introductory Meetings:
- September 8, 6:30PM: Armory Room 0110
- September 9, 6:30PM: Jimenez Hall Room 0112
We are a club sport at the University of Maryland open to all students. We welcome you to our team’s introductory period, where you will learn the basics of rowing and begin to develop your fitness. After a few weeks, we will conduct a fitness test on a rowing ergometer. We will begin the selection process for our lineups while you continue to develop your skills with our coaching staff. We will practice daily to prepare you for our first race, which will occur in the mid-Fall.
If you enjoy competing, working together, and finding out what you can achieve at your best, you should consider becoming a Maryland Oarsman or Coxswain!
Frequently Asked Questions
Who should join?
We are looking for motivated athletes who want to get in the best shape of their life. While the prototypical rower tends to be over 6 feet tall and between 180-200 pounds, many highly successful rowers do not fit this mold. Smaller individuals who can also consider being coxswains, who lead their crews through training and racing.
Experienced rowers are welcome, but the majority of our team is composed of athletes without prior rowing experience. Along the way, you’ll find great friendships with a diverse group of motivated people.
How much does it cost?
As a club sport, we are responsible for a large portion of our team’s budget. But through an accomodating dues plan and a variety of fundraising options, we can usually meet the needs of all team members.
Do I have to get up early?
NO! In the fall season, novice squad members have flexible afternoon practices that integrate with class schedules. This allows the team to be succesful both on the water and in the classroom.
