Maryland recently took delivery of a new Vespoli M2, the team’s first new boat in several years. The Varsity 8 will be putting the as-yet-unnamed new boat through its paces over the next few weeks, getting ready for the season opener at the Occoquan Sprints on April 5th. The honor of naming the new boat will go to the winner of the Maryland Men’s Crew Alumni’s class challenge, which runs until the season finale at ACRAs on Memorial Day weekend. It will be christened at the team’s 10-year reunion in June.

The crew of the Launi (background) was victorious in the 2009 Head of the Anacostia.
Spring training heated up with the varsity’s Head of the Anacostia race. In a grueling battle that lasted almost an hour, two fours made up of the varsity 8 traded the lead for the first half down the Anacostia. After spinning and heading towards the finish, however, the crew of the Launi (C - Fineberg, Gradski, Reid, Brown, Frechette) took a decisive move to take the lead and never let up until crossing the finish line in a time 55:43.87, taking nearly 30 seconds over the other crew who finished in 56:12.01. Next up is the team’s first race at the Occoquan Sprints on April 5.

Today’s regatta saw the MD crew establishing a starting point for the rest of the season. The Varsity A and B boats came in 8th and 9th, respectively. The A boat, stroked by senior Kevin Brown came in at 15:12.2, and the B boat stroked by sophomore Kellin Smith came in at 16:37.8, and was issued a 30 second penalty for being on the wrong side of a race buoy.
The Open Four was unable to make it to the starting line on time, but rowed with a later heat, and came in 4th.

At right about the same time as Coach Ted Matherly recently announced the lineups for the first American Collegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta, team VP Peter Frechette finalized plans to travel from May 22 to May 26 by motor coach. It would seem that MD Crew is “all systems go” for ACRA in Oklahoma.
That being said, the team is still lacking funds for this trip, and will find itself in a deficit (even with the individual fees for competing rowers) if more donations don’t come in. So this is our final plea: If you were considering making a donation, please do so now. You will find the information lower on the home page. Every cent is appreciated as we plan for this historic journey to the new hub of southern rowing–Oklahoma City.
Now, as to the lineups, here they are:
