About the Team

We are a medium-sized crew.  Our fleet includes one brand new Vespoli 8 (2009), 3 eights, 3 fours, a pair/double, and a coach’s single.  All members are male, except for a couple of female coxswains.  We operate separately from the women’s team, but share the same facilities and collaborate often.

We row on the Anacostia River, out of a boathouse in Bladensburg Waterfront Park, a Maryland State Park just three miles from campus. The team has water practices every weekday morning September through November and late February through May. During the winter, we train indoors–rowing, running, and lifting.  We are very fortunate to have an (unpaid) all-star coaching staff.  We are prohibited from paying coaches because that would constitute an “employment” for the State of Maryland, which we are not authorized issue.

The team is student lead–one of the perks of being a club sport.  Oarsmen and coxswains come with outstanding enthusiasm and dedication to make the team what it is.  The student officers include a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Fundraising Chairman, all of whom are elected by the oarsmen and coxes.

Each member pays $150 dues per semester, which helps to fund competitions and other costs.  Team members also put in hours with the Rent-a-Rower program, which connects the team with local residents to take care of house chores in exchange for fundraising money.
