MD Crew Still in Need of Funds for ACRA

ACRA Oklahoma City, OK Rowers

At right about the same time as Coach Ted Matherly recently announced the lineups for the first American Collegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta, team VP Peter Frechette finalized plans to travel from May 22 to May 26 by motor coach. It would seem that MD Crew is “all systems go” for ACRA in Oklahoma.

That being said, the team is still lacking funds for this trip, and will find itself in a deficit (even with the individual fees for competing rowers) if more donations don’t come in. So this is our final plea: If you were considering making a donation, please do so now. You will find the information lower on the home page. Every cent is appreciated as we plan for this historic journey to the new hub of southern rowing–Oklahoma City.

Now, as to the lineups, here they are:

Dad Vail Regatta 2008

One week before finals, Terp rowers found themselves in Philidelphia’s historic Dad Vail Regatta. The Dad Vail Regatta has traditionally been viewed as the team’s championship regatta, though that is taking a promising turn this season with the advent of the American Collegiate Rowing Association.

Rowers battled it out Friday in heat races to determine who would be competing in the finals Saturday. This regatta pulls some of the greatest teams from across the country, which has made it one of the most challenging (and exciting) regattas of the season.

A short talk with Varsity ‘B’ boat rower Andrew Sun revealed that the story of the day was their race in which they came from behind to beat Ohio State in their heat, which earned them a spot in the semi-finals. The boat didn’t advance from semi-finals, but the enthusiasm in Andrew’s storytelling was more than enough to be sure that it was worth the race.

The team would like to thank the parents for organizing food and tents. We all know that rowers could always use some food, and it made enduring the rain much more bearable.

Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Crew Championship

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Maryland Crew faced off with Mid-Atlantic area teams Sunday in the long-anticipated MACCC Regatta. The freshman/novice boats took the show, finishing first in the 4+ (but placing second due to a 3.6 second penalty assessment). The other novice 4+ placed fourth in the same race.

The varsity 8+ advanced to the finals, but finished last. Coach Ted Matherly reported that “The second varsity/lightweight 8+ had one of their best races of the season racing in the same event as the varsity 8+, placing an impressive 8th amongst boats made up of the top guys from other schools.”

Here’s a link to the race RESULTS.
