Newborn Lena Rose Fleschner

On Monday morning, Maryland Crew welcomed its newest member into the world. Lena Rose Fleschner, daughter of head coach Chad Fleschner was born at 2:08am - a good time to practice early morning workouts. She weighed 6lbs, 14oz - enough to be a fierce lightweight or commanding coxwain. 20.25 inches long - “lean and mean” once the baby fat is gone. When asked whether she would be a port or starboard, her father said, “let’s say she’ll be a sculler like her old man.”

Congratulations Chad and Karin!

Occoquan Sprints Kicks Off Season

Coach Ted Matherly

The first race of the season was today at Sandy Run Park in Fairfax, VA. Coming in with a second place finish from the novice 8+, and a finish in the petite finals for the varsity crew. Coach Ted Matherly reflects:

“We raced against some excellent schools and posted good results, with both the varsity and JV executing the race plan well in the finals. More important at this point in the season, we saw some areas in our races that need our attention before we can achieve the speed we want.”

With more time on the water as it warms up, and more sunlight as the season progresses, the crews will undoubtedly jump on the opportunity to improve their skills as a team.

Heads up for the next race less than a week away–the Johns Hopkins Invitational is Saturday, 4/5/2008 in the Patapsco River Basin in Baltimore.

Here’s a link to the race RESULTS.

Novices’ First Day on the Water

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

For a few novices, this was their first day on the water ever. For the rest, it was a welcome return to the water. Novice practices happen at 4 PM, so they get to enjoy the sun and warmth–both of which were abundantly available today. Novice coach Elana taught the new guys some things, then got the boats in the water. Some new rowers pick it up quickly, and today, all of those rowers were in attendance.
