Spring Schedule Is Up!

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

The spring schedule has been determined for MD Crew. Original plans to attend the San Diego Crew Classic have been canned in favor of attending the American Collegiate Rowing Association’s National Championship Regatta in Oklahoma City. We will be going to the Occoquan Resevoir in Fairfax, VA for our first regatta, and then again towards the end of the season for the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Crew Championships. We’ll return to Baltimore to compete in the Johns Hopkins Invitational, which was cancelled last year due to weather. Then, it’s the first big trip of the spring up to the Cooper River in NJ. This was a regatta in which the heavy eight took first in the club event two years ago, then worked hard to make a name for itself in the varsity event the next year. Then it’s to Philadelphia’s historic Dad Vail Regatta. This is the largest intercollegiate rowing event in the United States.

  • Occoquan Sprints: 3/30

  • Johns Hopkins Invitational: 4/5

  • Knecht Cup: 4/12-13

  • Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Crew Championships: 5/4

  • Dad Vail Regatta: 5/9-10

  • (tentative) ACRA Nationals: 5/24-5/25

    Announcing: American Collegiate Rowing Association

    Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

This winter, a number of university club rowing programs joined together to solve an upcoming problem. Whereas the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) is likely to pass a rule barring club teams from its annual championship regatta, club teams are looking for a championship to call their own. That’s where the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) comes in.

The new championship event for club college teams is being arranged by the newly-founded ACRA, and will take place May 24-25 in Oklahoma City, OK. UMD Crew is in full support of the new rowing organization, and is making plans to attend the championship regatta in Oklahoma.

Here’s the story from the New York Times.

    Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints

    Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

For the past three years, the University of Maryland Men’s Crew has held the largest collegiate rowing presence at the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints. This year was no different. The pain and grimaces were just a preview of what was to come in the winter training months.
